Why is Innovation in Healthcare Crucial for the Future?

I've always been creative, coming up with new ideas; fascinated by how data, science and technology continue to shape the world we live in today. However, I would have never considered or referred to myself as an innovator when I was younger when working in health or the voluntary and community sector as there is always an expectation to create services and solutions to secure new and alternative sources of funding to meet our beneficiaries needs. 

By definition, innovation involves the action or process of creating new methods, ideas, products, or transforming existing ones. Whilst it is essential for the ongoing success and growth of any organisation, the operational and financial pressures placed on public sector and VCSE has meant there is often less opportunity to invest in research and development unlike in commercial sectors. This got me thinking about the importance of innovation. Why is innovation in healthcare crucial for the future. 

What is Innovation? 

In order to understand the importance of innovation, we need to understand what innovation is. Innovation is often understood as the introduction of something new or a significant improvement in something existing. It can manifest as new products, services, processes, or ideas that bring about substantial change. In the healthcare sector, this can mean developing a new medical device, implementing a novel treatment protocol, adopting successful practices or utilising technology to improve patient outcomes and streamline operations to enhance patient access, experience and operational efficiency. 

So What Makes Something Innovative? 

For something to be considered innovative, it must bring about a notable improvement or solve a problem in a way that hasn’t been done before. In healthcare, this could be a new method of diagnosis, a groundbreaking treatment for a disease, or a technology that enhances the delivery of care. The key attributes of innovation include: 

• Novelty: It introduces something new or different. 

• Impact: It significantly improves processes, outcomes, or experiences. 

• Scalability: It can be expanded or adapted to broader applications. 

• Efficiency: It enhances productivity or reduces costs.

Why is Innovation Important in Healthcare?
